Where Is Sonny on GENERAL HOSPITAL? — Maurice Benard Speaks Out!
When Sonny took that fall off the bridge and disappeared into the river below, some fans wondered if Maurice Benard was leaving GENERAL HOSPITAL and the rumors began flying fast and furious across the internet. And one that the actor was quick to debunk was when a fan asked him on Twitter if he had COVID-19 and that’s why he wasn’t on the soap right now. “Thank God, no,” Benard responded.
However, the Emmy-winning actor has been keeping things deliberately vague on social media as he answers the constant barrage of questions from fans with various emoji, usually a shrug. “When are you coming back?” Shrug. “Sonny is not dead.” Shrug. Heck, Benard has been growing a beard and let his hair go gray during his time away from the soap and when a viewer suggested they’d love to see Sonny come back looking like that because he “rocks the gray,” he once again shrugged.
Fans shouldn’t worry too much, though. Benard will certainly be bringing Sonny back to Port Charles, even if the actor is keeping details of when and how under wraps to avoid spoiling the upcoming twists and turns. So it’s bad news for the “fan” who complained that he’d rather see Sonny off the show forever. “You just made my night,” Benard joked. “I was actually thinking about retiring, but after reading this lovely tweet, I may just have to do another 28 years!”
For fans who miss seeing Sonny on GH right now, they can still get their daily fix of his portrayer by following Benard on Twitter and Instagram and watching his ongoing series of State of Mind videos on YouTube. Heck, the actor’s scenes with Buddy the Goat will cheer you right up!
A common prediction among viewers is that Sonny will return to Port Charles with amnesia. And while some suspect that Jason and Carly know exactly where Sonny is and are keeping him in a safehouse somewhere, others wonder if he was rescued and nursed back to health by someone else (maybe even Nelle!).
