Backstage at DAYS OF OUR LIVES With Dick Van Dyke!
He may have only been a guest star in a few episodes, but Dick Van Dyke’s appearance on DAYS OF OUR LIVES revealed that his character had quite a strong connection to the canvas! (No spoilers for those who haven’t watched it yet!) And the actor, who has had success in film, primetime, and on the stage, was eager to try the new experience of doing a soap opera.
After jokingly asking gym buddy Drake Hogestyn (John) if DAYS had any parts for older people, Van Dyke was surprised when he returned with an offer to guest on the soap! “I said, ‘I’d love to have a new experience,” he told Soap Opera Digest. “I had never watched a soap opera, really, because I don’t have five days in a row to watch anything!”
The show biz vet was impressed by the smooth-running production and the energy the actors had on set, and said he’d be up for a return at some point. “They told me I might show up in the story at some later date,” Van Dyke confided. “So I said, ‘I’ll be there.’”
