That’s Maysoon Zayid playing Zahra Amir on GENERAL HOSPITAL the attorney representing the criminals of Port Charles. She describes herself on her own website as a “comedian, actress, disability advocate, and tap dancer.” The Palestinian performer turned to stand-up comedy when she found it difficult to land roles because of her cerebral palsy, but once told the New York Times that “her lifelong dream was to appear on GH.” Well, that dream has finally came true in June of 2019 when she joined the cast of the soap! And better still, the actress revealed the week after her first episode: “It’s official! I’m recurring!” Since there’s no end of shady characters in town in need of legal representation, Zahra could show up at any time!
Zahra Amir made her debut in the June 21 episode when Diane Miller ran into her at the courthouse. Zahra was representing Shiloh in his custody battle over the child he believed to be his son, Wiley. She urged her client to leave his Dawn of Day cult behind because it wouldn’t help his case, and Sonny even tried to hire Zahra so she would drop Shiloh’s case, but she refused. In the end, Shiloh’s crimes caught up with him and his custody case was dropped.
Zahra resurfaced in March of 2020 when she represented Nelle Benson in court and actually managed to get the charges against her client dropped! If she can do that, she can pretty much get anyone off!
Zayid is best known for her work as a stand-up comic, and her TED talk went viral. She also had a role in the 2008 Adam Sandler film You Don’t Mess With the Zohan. She also developed a pilot for a sitcom called CAN-CAN, a semi-autobiographical look at her life.
Stay tuned to see if Zahra pops up to represent more of Port Charles’ most wanted, and for more GH news, keep reading the ABC edition of Soaps In Depth magazine.
