Soap Actor Malachy McCourt Dead at 92
Daytime alum Malachy McCourt died on March 11 at the age of 92. His wife, Diana McCourt, confirmed his passing to The New York Times.
The actor worked on multiple soaps during his long career, starting with bartender Kevin McGuinness on RYAN’S HOPE from 1975-1989. He also played Big Bigelowe on SEARCH FOR TOMORROW from 1984-85. McCourt also made brief appearances on ANOTHER WORLD, GUIDING LIGHT, and ONE LIFE TO LIVE, but might be best remembered to some ABC Daytime fans for his annual holiday appearances on ALL MY CHILDREN as Father Clarence from 1992-2009.
McCourt also appeared on the silver screen in movies like Q: The Winged Serpent, The Brink’s Job, Brewster’s Millions, and The Devil’s Own. He could also be seen in episodes of primetime series such as TALES FROM THE DARKSIDE, THE YOUNG INDIANA JONES CHRONICLES, COSBY, and OZ.
The younger brother of author Frank McCourt, Malachy was also a writer, penning two memoirs titled A Monk Swimming and Singing My Him Song which chronicled his life in Ireland and return to the United States. He also owned Malachy’s, a bar on Third Avenue in New York City, and ran for governor of New York in 2006.
McCourt is survived by his wife, Diana, daughter Siobhan, sons Malachy III, Conor, and Cormac, stepdaughter Nina, nine grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. Our thoughts are with his family and friends during this difficult time.
