Cameron Mathison Shares His Dog’s Cancer Battle

Tags:

Take a scroll through Cameron Mathison’s Instagram page, and it’s clear that the actor who plays GENERAL HOSPITAL’s Drew has a special bond with his dog. Mathison often refers to the Doberman, whose name is Red, as his “best bud” in posts. So it was heartbreaking when the actor shared the news that his beloved pooch is battling cancer.

“As a cancer survivor, it’s so hard to see others receive that dreaded diagnosis,” began Mathison, who is cancer-free after having a tumor removed from his kidney back in 2019. “Red was diagnosed with a multiple myeloma-type cancer a few months ago.”

Multiple myeloma is a blood cancer that affects plasma cells, and humans and animals can be affected. The malignant cancer can involve organs and bones, as it has with the Mathison family’s dog. “It’s inside his spine,” the GH star said of Red, “and has caused paralysis in his back legs.”

While a cure is rare, treatments can help the pet feel better. The video that accompanied Mathison’s post included snippets of the treatments that Red is currently undergoing, like aquatic therapy, using a wheelchair, and acupuncture. “The prognosis isn’t good,” Mathison confessed. “But with the help of Two Hands Four Paws Foundation, we are doing our best to keep his quality of life the best we can for the time he has left.”

Mathison’s video was set to the Jack Johnson song “Better Together,” and ended with an adorable photograph of him and Red snuggling together. “Love you, Red. You’ve been so good to us for 11 years and we are doing our best to show you how grateful we are.”

We are so sorry to hear this news about Red.
