Cancer Survivor Cameron Mathison Shares His “Emotional Night”

Tags:

The evening of Nov. 13 was a powerful one for GENERAL HOSPITAL star Cameron Mathison (Drew) as he hosted the Gateway for Cancer Research Gala. The actor has been open about his own battle with kidney cancer and just weeks earlier had lost his mother to brain cancer. “About 15 days after my mom lost her battle with brain cancer,” he shared on Instagram. “I knew it was going to be a tough one for me.”

“When Gateway heard of my mom’s passing, they told me they would understand if I needed to cancel,” Mathison added, “but I knew I had to be here for this. For my mom, for my own cancer journey, and for the millions of others affected by this horrible, relentless disease.”

The GH actor shared some additional photos and while he was all smiles on the red carpet, taking to the microphone at the fundraiser to speak his truth was clearly a difficult moment. “It was an emotional night sharing my mom’s and my cancer stories,” Mathison admitted. “But so happy I did.”

And putting himself out there for this important cause was worth it in the end. “We raised over $4,000,000 last night to fund innovative research to help those with cancer feel better and live longer!” Mathison reported. “So grateful to be a part of this meaningful evening with everyone at Gateway for Cancer Research.”
