GENERAL HOSPITAL’s John J. York Opens up About His Health Battle
Soap fans were concerned when John J. York revealed that he was taking a brief hiatus from GENERAL HOSPITAL and now, a week later, the actor has revealed the reason why. “Well hey, you guys, how you doing?” he said in a selfie video posted to X. “It’s me. I said I was gonna give you an update on the reason I’m taking a little hiatus from GH and here it is…
“So last December,” York continued, “I was diagnosed with Myelodysplastic Syndrome or MDS and multiple smoldering myeloma. Two blood and bone marrow disorders.”
Myelodysplastic syndrome is a blood disorder where immature blood cells in the bone marrow do not mature to become healthy blood cells. Smoldering multiple myeloma is a rare early form of multiple myeloma which, if untreated, could develop into cancer. Thankfully, there are treatments, some of which York has already received.
“Over the past many months, I have had three bone marrow biopsies, many chemo treatments,” he revealed. “I have another one coming up in a couple of weeks. And I’m closing in on a blood stem cell transplant. I’ve been working with some wonderful people at Be The Match to find a potential donor on their registry.

In his video, York seems in good spirits, so he’s going into this fight with the right attitude. “This isn’t goodbye, this is just so long,” he promised. “I’ll have to take a break for at least three, maybe four months.
