Fans have eagerly been awaiting news on how GENERAL HOSPITAL will celebrate its 60th anniversary, and ABC had some announcements to make at a recent press event, including the fact that fan-favorite actress Jane Elliot will be returning as Tracy Quartermaine in April! Although the network teased an anniversary storyline where the icons of Port Charles unite to stop a legendary threat from the past, it isn’t clear if Tracy will be a part of that or another special storyline.
Elliot first appeared on GH back in 1978 and played Tracy on and off over the decades until her retirement in 2017. She even brought her popular character over to ABC sister soap THE CITY in 1996, remaining until its cancelation in 1997. And over those many years, the actress earned four Daytime Emmy Nominations and took home the Supporting Actress trophy in 1981.
Although Elliot announced her retirement in 2017 and Tracy was written off the canvas to enjoy a happy ending with beau Luke Spencer in Europe, she has returned for the occasional visit, first over the holidays from December 2019 to February 2020, then from November 2020 through January 2021, and her most recent visit from January 2022 to February of that year.
During her most recent visit, Tracy showed up at Laura and Kevin’s door just after midnight on New Year’s Day to reveal that Luke had been killed in a cable car crash in Austria. She was then arrested for having framed Alexis for drunk driving during her last visit, but quickly released after Alexis refused to cooperate with the police. Tracy attended Luke’s memorial service and then returned to Amsterdam to settle his affairs.
Many GH fans are hoping that Tracy’s return will reveal that Luke hadn’t died and include a return from Anthony Geary as the iconic Luke Spencer for the soap’s 60th anniversary. But ABC has released no details as to the storyline that will bring Tracy back to Port Charles, so at this point, that’s just wishful thinking.
For its upcoming 60th anniversary, GH is also planning a special episode paying tribute to the late Sonya Eddy as well as the return of the Nurses Ball, so keep checking back here at SoapsInDepth.com for more updates on Elliot’s return as Tracy and any other surprises ABC has in store!
