Lydia Look Opens up About Playing Selena Wu on GH

The role of Selina Wu on GENERAL HOSPITAL has seen increased screen time in recent months, and nobody is more excited about it than her portrayer, Lydia Look. “I’m so thrilled, but it was something I didn’t expect,” she admitted to Soap Opera Digest.

Look joined the cast of GH back in August 2015, making sporadic appearances as Ms. Wu, head of one of Port Charles crime families. “When I started out, I was an under-five,” she revealed. “I just came in once a year for the mob meetings.”

She had auditioned for the role of a doctor years ago, but casting director Mark Teschner eventually called her up to offer a different character. “I was like, ‘Hell, yeah! A mob boss? Sure!’” Look recalled. “So I came in and I did that and for a couple of years after that, it was just a once-a-year thing, and then there was a maybe two-year lapse where we didn’t have a mob meeting. But in the last year or two, it’s started to grow more and more, and I am just so chuffed. I don’t know what I did to deserve this!”

Look has worked steadily throughout her career, appearing on primetime series like ALLY MCBEAL, ER, THE PROUD FAMILY, PUSHING DAISIES, and NCIS: HAWAI’I as well as films like Battle of the Damned and Paper Tiger. But she’s still very excited to be playing in Port Charles more often. “They have made me so intelligent, so well-spoken, so smart, so tough, and I go, ‘This is better than any primetime character I’ve been given so far!’” the actress exclaimed. “I am so grateful to this writing team for representing me the way I’d like to be represented on screen: as a smart, tough, Asian woman who holds her own against the men in our world.

“It’s already hard holding your own against men as a woman,” Look added, “and it’s a double challenge when you’re a minority. But that has never been an issue with me with the scripts. It has always been so gratifying. I read it and I go, ‘Yeah!’ She is just a dream… a dream character to work with.”

Now that Selina’s deal with Sonny has gotten Brad out of prison on parole, will she be bringing her nephew into the family business? And while she and Sonny have an arrangement, the same can’t be said for Michael. Keep watching GH to see what kind of drama Selina gets mixed up in next!
