Steve Burton Returns to GENERAL HOSPITAL!

Tags:

Fans who tuned in to the GENERAL HOSPITAL primetime special 60 YEARS OF STARS & STORYTELLING were expecting a look back at the past six decades of the popular Emmy-winning soap, but at the very end, they got a tease of what’s coming up in the very near future — the return of Jason Morgan, played by Steve Burton!

In the anniversary special’s final moments, after the cast all celebrated together, there was a cut to three doors in a row on a black set. The first opened and Laura Wright (Carly) stepped out to share the beginning of the age-old saying “when one door closes,” before Kelly Monaco (Sam) opened the third door to finish the saying with “another one opens.”

And then the center door opened and from under very dramatic lighting, Burton emerged to promise: “Stay tuned… Big things are coming to Port Charles!”

Burton first joined the cast of GH back in 1991 as Jason Quartermaine, later to become Jason Morgan. He left the soap in 2012 and enjoyed a brief run as Dylan McAvoy on THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS before returning to Port Charles in 2017 to reclaim his role. (It had been recast with Billy Miller, so the storyline was retconned to have Miller playing Jason’s previously-unknown twin brother, Drew Cain.)

In November 2021, Burton once again left GH because he declined to comply with the Disney/ABC COVID-19 vaccine mandate at the time. Fans knew it would probably be only a matter of time before the actor came back home to Port Charles, but in the meantime, he returned to his first soap role of Harris Michaels on DAYS OF OUR LIVES, which he originated back in 1988. However, on Jan. 3, Burton announced that he had wrapped up his one-year contract at DAYS, and just one day later, the GH primetime anniversary special broke the news that he was on his way back to the ABC sudser!

The character of Jason was presumed deceased during a cave-in on Cassadine Island, but no body was ever found, so viewers have been waiting (mostly) patiently for his return from the “dead.” At this time, ABC would only confirm that Burton was coming back as Jason, so keep checking back here at SoapsInDepth.com for future updates, including when his first episode will air!
