The Real Reason Marcus Coloma Left GENERAL HOSPITAL

Tags:

When the news broke that Marcus Coloma would be exiting as GENERAL HOSPITAL’s Nikolas, along with it came some juicy backstage drama: According to rumors, Coloma had something of a royal hissy fit after learning that he’d been let go from the soap and refused to film his final scenes.

A new report from Deadline, however, clarifies that while Coloma in fact did not film his final scenes as Nikolas, the series of events played out much differently. A letter provided by a spokesperson for the actor refuted the rumors that Coloma was fired and walked off the set, declining to film anything further. “Marcus has wrapped his three-year contract with GH and has thoroughly enjoyed working on the show with such a talented group of actors, writers, producers, and directors,” read the statement.

As for the reason why Coloma didn’t work on any exit scenes, the actor’s rep clarified that “Unfortunately, due to health issues with his recent COVID exposure, the network graciously agreed that he should not film the remaining few days of the year.”

Back in mid-November, Coloma was temporarily replaced by Adam Huss for a few days; the actor revealed in an Instagram post that he’d been sick with COVID. It’s not clear if Coloma’s “health issues” were related to that bout with the coronavirus or if there was another exposure.

Coloma made his debut as Nikolas Cassadine in October 2019, the latest in a line of recasts since Tyler Christopher originated the role of Laura’s son in 1996, and appeared in nearly 300 episodes of the soap during his tenure. “I was immediately taken with the family feel of the ensemble cast,” said Coloma in the statement. “And I fell in love with the extremely passionate fanbase. Their outpouring of love and excitement, week after week has been unlike anything I’ve ever experienced before. I will always be grateful for their kindness and support.”

The actor will make his final appearance in late January, but there’s been no confirmation if the soap will permanently recast Nikolas yet again or write the character off the canvas.
