Melissa Claire Egan Opens up About Returning to Work and What’s Next for Chelsea and Adam (EXCLUSIVE)

As THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS prepares to return with all-new episodes on Monday, Aug. 10, Soaps In Depth chatted with Melissa Claire Egan (Chelsea) to find out what it’s like being back on set with all of the new safety regulations due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “As much as it feels different, it feels like I never left,” the actress declared happily. “It’s been great just to be back at work.

“Everybody’s been doing such a great job of keeping us safe,” she continued. “There are a lot more rules. We wear our masks everywhere, even during rehearsals. We just take them off for taping, and even when we’re taping we’re six feet apart. They have us hold a six-foot rope between ourselves to make sure. There are a lot more rules to adhere to and remember, like you have to enter and exit the stage a certain way, which I keep forgetting. But I feel super safe. So it’s been kind of wonderful.”

Despite all the safety precautions and social distancing, Egan promised that it’s still the Y&R fans have come to know and love. “Our directors are really smart,” she enthused. “They shot it in certain ways where it doesn’t really look that much different. The blocking is different and the directors’ shots are different but they’re doing a great job making it look pretty much like it did before. So I think to the audience it should look pretty normal.”

“There’s going to be a lot for them to deal with and go through,” promised Egan of Adam and Chelsea.Howard Wise/jpistudios.com

Because Y&R is picking up right where it left off, Chelsea’s life will be turned upside down by the revelation that Adam was the one who killed A.J. Montalvo, not Victor. Of course, that’s nothing compared to how Adam feels after that bomb dropped! “Adam’s basically having an emotional breakdown because he was just told that he killed someone when he was a young boy,” Egan previewed. “So that’s obviously a lot to take in. And at first, he doesn’t remember. So Chelsea is trying to be a supportive wife and be there for him and try to convince him he’s not a monster. But obviously, that’s a really hard thing to do.”

And as if that wasn’t enough for Chelsea and Adam to have to deal with, there’s yet another complication on the horizon! “Mentally and emotionally, he’s spent and he’s trying to remember these things from his childhood that he doesn’t remember so he needs therapy,” she teased. “And who’s a therapist in town? Sharon. So that’s going to be a bit of an issue for Chelsea, too. It’s really fun.

“Not fun for Chelsea — I don’t think she’s a fan of the idea,” Egan quickly added with a chuckle. “But that adds a lot of levels and a lot of elements to the story we’re about to tell. I hope the fans like it. I think they will. There’s a lot of twists and turns.”
