Now that she’s had a little time to get used to the idea of being a Daytime Emmy Award nominee, The Young & The Restless star Allison Lanier (Summer) can move past the shock and prepare for the big night. “I feel like I’m just getting excited for the ceremony and to see everybody and everything leading up to it,” she confided to Soaps In Depth. “I’m just excited for the show and all the nominations that the show has gotten, so it’s fun.”

When she found out she’d been nominated for Supporting Actress, Lanier was actually on set, working! “It was just a total surprise,” she admitted. “I wasn’t expecting it at all. [executive producer and headwriter] Josh Griffith came out on set and surprised me and let me know that the news had come in, that I’d been nominated, and it was just such a lovely way to hear being surrounded by all my coworkers and everything like that.”

Between Summer and Kyle’s breakup and Phyllis’ death and resurrection, Lanier had lots of great material in 2023 to choose from when assembling her Emmy reel. “I used some of the story arc from Phyllis’ ‘death.’” she explained. “Some of my first scenes were those where Summer confronts Diane directly after the gala, just this anger mixed with grief that she was feeling at the time and pouring it all out into Diane.

“And then I also included Kyle and Summer’s final breakup scene where they agreed to finalize their divorce,” she added, “the quieter, more heartbreaking moment for them both. And I also included when Summer found out that Phyllis was alive and another scene with Daniel where she was trying to explain the situation but felt like she was going crazy almost.”

Although Lanier knew which scenes she felt most confident about submitting, she still looked for some help putting her reel together. “Honestly, this is my first time submitting, so it was a brand new process for me,” she said. “[Y&R publicist] Matt Kane did help me with the ordering of the scenes a little bit. He suggested I push something up and that was really good advice.”

Now that everything has worked out and Lanier has received her first Daytime Emmy nomination, she just has to get ready for the big night. “It feels so soon,” she sighed. “I’m like, okay, how am I supposed to get all of this done? I’ve got to find a dress. I’ve got to figure out how I want to look. So yes, planning is happening.”

One thing she doesn’t have to worry about is finding someone to join her that evening! “I invited my mom to come with me as my date and she’s very excited,” Lanier revealed. “So she’ll fly in from Georgia that week to attend with me, which is going to be so much fun.”
