When Women Invented Television

The newest guest in The Locher Room isn’t a soap star but she’s going to be discussing a topic that is very relevant to soap fans when she joins host Alan Locher for an in-depth conversation on Friday, Nov. 19, at 3 p.m. ET.

New York Times bestselling author, Jennifer Keishin Armstrong will be talking about the little-known story of four trailblazing women in the early days of TV broadcasting who laid the foundation of our industry as we know it, just as she chronicled in her book, When Women Invented Television.

One of those women is the iconic Irna Phillips, who created several soaps throughout her career, including GUIDING LIGHT, AS THE WORLD TURNS, and ANOTHER WORLD. Also part of the book is Gertrude Berg, who turned her radio show into a Jewish family comedy that created an empire, Hazel Scott, the first Black person to host a national evening variety program, and Betty White, who became a daytime talk show fave and one of the first women to produce, write, and star in her own show.
