The mention of Florence Grey on GENERAL HOSPITAL reaches way back into the soap’s history, all the way back to the early seventies! The character actually appeared on screen back in 1973 and was played by actress Anne Collings for her limited run. And while that may have been a long time ago, Florence definitely has a connection to a current storyline going on in 2020 and resurfaced in December played by actress Annie Abbott!
Florence was first introduced as the first patient of Lesley Webber’s (then Lesley Williams), who had begun working as a cardiologist at General Hospital. Florence was suffering from stomach ulcers she believed to be brought on from the stress of her failing marriage to husband Gordon Grey.
When Florence was sent to see psychiatrist Peter Taylor, she opened up about the affair that her husband had years ago with one of his students. He had also gotten the young woman pregnant, but the baby had died shortly after birth. When Lesley heard about this affair, she realized that she was that student. Gordon resurfaced and confessed his love to Lesley, insisting he would leave his wife for her, but she convinced him to stay with Florence. Gordon and Florence reconciled and left Port Charles soon after. Later, Lesley learned that Gordon’s child was still alive and went in search of this child, discovering her daughter, Laura!
In 2020, Jordan Ashford and Curtis Ashford were investigating the past of Cyrus Renault, looking for anything they could use to take down the villain, and discovered that Cyrus has a connection to a patient at a care facility named Florence Grey, who used to live in Port Charles! Once back in town, Jordan and Curtis ran into shady attorney Martin Grey and suspected he might also be connected!
Curtis and Laura tracked Florence down at a long-term care facility in Vermont and traveled there to find her. Posing as a doctor, Curtis got Laura admitted as a patient so they could get closer to their target and learn the truth! But Laura wasn’t prepared to discover that Martin and Cyrus are her half siblings!
Laura also discovered that while Florence enjoys visits from Martin, she doesn’t like Cyrus at all, blaming him for the death of her husband! He inisists it was an accident, and wishes his mother could see him in a better light, but she’s not interested.
Later, in order to get back at Cyrus, Carly arranged for Florence to be transferred out of the long-term care facility!
Stay tuned to GH as the mystery continues to unfold!
