Soap fans are getting a blast from the past this week on General Hospital when Lane Davies reunites with Nancy Lee Grahn on screen! The two first worked together back on Santa Barbara where their Mason and Julia became one of the NBC soap’s most popular and enduring supercouples. Davies then joined the cast of GH in 2002 for a two-year stint as Dr. Cameron Lewis.

Now the actor is back on daytime as Fergus Byrne, the brother of Neil Byrne, the doctor that Grahn’s Alexis was dating at the time he overdosed in her bed. And he’s not quite sure exactly how this Port Charles comeback came about!

“It was a combination of factors, I think,” Davies admitted to Soap Opera Digest. “I know Nancy had been sort of making noises, like, ‘Get Lane back somehow!’ So that always helps, when a 28-year veteran of the show wants you back.”

Then, the actor ran into departing GH co-headwriter Patrick Mulcahey at the funeral of Bridget Dobson, the co-creator of Santa Barbara, where the scribe had written for Davies and Grahn. “We had a lovely lunch and visit, even though it was kind of a sad time,” he recalled, “and I think he took a look at me and thought, ‘Well, he’s holding up pretty well. Maybe we can get him on the show.’ I’m honestly not sure, but I think it was a fortuitous combination of factors that got me back. I’m at a stage at my life where if it seems like fun, I’ll do it. My criteria is, ‘Is it fun?’ ‘Does it involve travel?’ “Does it pay?’ Any one of those three will get me off my mountain and back to work, but it has to be at least one of those three — and this was all three.”

Currently splitting his time between his home in Georgia and working with the Prague Shakespeare Company in the Czech Republic, Davies was excited to return to GH and share scenes with Grahn once again. And while this time around, his run is only slated for a few episodes, the actor would be happy to come back for more if the soap came calling again.

“Oh, totally,” Davies declared. “Like I said, I’m at a point in my life where if it’s fun, I’ll do it, and its always fun to work with Nancy. And I like camera work. I don’t do that much of it anymore but I’m not fully retired. I call myself semi-retired, which basically means I’m lazy. But I had great fun this time and it fits my sort of life schedule of extreme slothfulness mixed with occasional bursts of energy and productivity. It suits that rhythm quite well.”
