Melody Thomas Scott Previews Y&R’s “Shocking” Anniversary Episodes

To commemorate THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS’ 50th anniversary, the soap is going all out with both real-life and reel-life events! Mirroring the special anniversary bash thrown for cast and crew on March 17, Y&R will be airing special episodes centered around the gala celebrating Genoa City’s bicentennial. And it’s going to be a party that viewers will definitely want to make sure they RSVP for!

“The premise is Nikki has put together this huge gala for Genoa City’s bicentennial,” Melody Thomas Scott (Nikki) teased during an appearance on THE TALK. “We have brought back a lot of former actors to be a part of that. It’s pretty compelling… and pretty shocking. It’s the 50th anniversary — we have to deliver something really good!”

During the afternoon talk show, the Y&R vet spoke about another of the real-life events leading up to the soap’s 50th anniversary on Sunday, March 26, which was the opening of a time capsule that was buried 25 years ago on the soap’s 25th anniversary.

“I was there, 25 years ago when Bill and Lee Bell, our creators and original headwriters… It was a very big deal and we had a ceremony,” Scott recalled before adding with a laugh, “And of course, now, 25 years have passed and I couldn’t remember one item that was put in there!”

One of the items recovered from the time capsule featured some words from the soap’s creator, William J. Bell. “Christian LeBlanc (Michael), he had several index cards, the big ones for when people give a speech,” she explained. “He said, ‘Mel, look! Bill Bell wrote this. It’s a speech that he wrote exactly 25 years ago.’ I said, “I can’t read this whole thing, Christian.’ He said, ‘Well, just read the first card.’

“So I read the first card, and it was so compelling and so wonderful and filled with the history of the show,” Scott admitted, “I ended up reading the whole thing! And it was the best thing to come out of there. Everybody there, you could hear a pin drop.”

While Y&R fans may not have been able to be at the opening of the time capsule to hear the moving speech, they can definitely tune in to the special episodes featuring the anniversary gala and watch all the drama unfold!
