Y&R’s Sasha Calle Opens Up About Playing Supergirl!
In case you missed the news, THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS star Sasha Calle (Lola) has been cast as Supergirl in the upcoming Warner Bros. movie The Flash. Director Andy Muschetti broke the news himself on Instagram by posting a video call in which he asked the actress if she could fly before presenting her with a familiar-looking red and blue suit. And days later, Calle was still in shock that she beat out more than 400 other women who auditioned to land the coveted role. “This still hasn’t fully hit me,” she wrote on Instagram. “I’m starting to cry as I type this because I know that it’s me in that video… but I still can’t believe it.”
Calle, who was raised in Massachusetts and is of Colombian descent, is the first Latina actress to ever play Supergirl — a monumental moment that was not lost on the Daytime Emmy nominee. “A Latina superhero? On what planet? Well, on this planet! What joy and what pride,” the Y&R actress wrote in Spanish, before giving endless gratitude to her beloved mom, Samira. “Thank you for your effort, for raising me alone and with much love. Love you. You are an example of a superhero.”
Turning her attention back to Muschetti, Calle thanked the filmmaker (in English) for giving her her big-screen break. “Andy, the moment I met you through Zoom when we started this process, it was as if I had known you my whole life,” she wrote, adding that she felt the same way upon meeting Ezra Miller, who plays The Flash. “Thank you for believing in me. Thank you to every person attached that has believed in me every stop of the way.”
There’s no doubt that Calle’s life is about to change forever. Whether or not she’ll be able to continue to work on the soap remains to be seen, but other actors have been able to successfully juggle their daytime duties with roles in primetime and film. “Dreams do come true, huh?” Calle concluded her heartfelt post.
