THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS’ Sasha Calle Cast as Supergirl!

Tags:

Congratulations to THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS star Sasha Calle (Lola), who has been cast as Supergirl in the upcoming Warner Bros. movie, The Flash! “I was more than four hundred auditions,” the film’s director, Andy Muschietti, told Deadline. “The talent poll was truly amazing and it was very hard to make a decision, but we finally found an actress who was destined to play this role.”

Muschietti shared a video call he made with Calle where he teased her by asking if she could fly and then revealing that she had been cast as Supergirl, holding up a very familiar-looking costume. Calle immediately covered her face in shock and struggled to speak as she processed the news. “Little me would be like, ‘No way!’” she finally admitted before asking, “Can I freak out for a second?” Given permission, Calle turned to someone off-camera to reveal that she got the part before dancing in her chair. “I’m probably not going to stop crying all day,” she said later. “I just want to say thank you so much again. I really… thank you. Thank you. Truly.”

The role of Supergirl was first played by actress Helen Slater in the 1984 movie and is currently played on television by Melissa Benoist. Reportedly, the actresses weren’t told which part they were reading for until very late in the process, and Calle also did a chemistry read with Flash star Ezra Miller. Naturally, due to COVID precautions, all auditions and readings were done over Zoom, but Calle is slated to fly out to join production on The Flash very soon.

Calle joined the cast of Y&R in September 2018 as Lola Rosales and earned a Daytime Emmy Award nomination in 2020 for Outstanding Young Performer in a Drama Series. “On behalf of everyone at The Young and the Restless, we’d like to congratulate Sasha Calle on making history and being chosen to play the first Latina Supergirl,” said executive prodcuer Anthony Morina and co-executive producer and headwriter Josh Griffith in a statement. “The role of Supergirl is a perfect fit for someone of Sasha’s immense talent and we wish her all the best as she takes on this groundbreaking role.”

At this time, there is no word as to how this movie role might affect Calle’s role on the soap, but actors have often been able to juggle daytime with primetime and films in the past. Keep checking back at SoapsInDepth.com for the latest!
