What Happened to Scott Grainger on THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS
Newer viewers might be familiar with the younger Scotty Grainger, but his father, Scott Grainger on THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS, was a totally different character. Peter Barton portrayed the character beginning in 1988 and even crossed over to sister soap THE BOLD & THE BEAUTIFUL for a bit before meeting a tragic fate in 1993.
Dr. Scott Grainger was a physician who was treating Christine Blair‘s mother, Jessica, who was suffering from AIDS. Christine and Scott soon fell in love, but they quickly called off their engagement upon learning that they were half-siblings since Scott was the result of an affair her mother had with his father, Jim Grainger! Sheila Carter became obsessed with Scott, which caused a bitter rivalry between her and Lauren Fenmore, who he was dating at the time. After taking a bullet for Christine, Scott’s near-death experience inspired him to propose to Lauren and they were married in 1990. But he was upset when Lauren miscarried their baby since she hadn’t even told him she was pregnant and sought comfort in Sheila’s arms.
Lauren and Scott split up when she found out about his one-night stand with Sheila, but they eventually decided to give their relationship another try. Unfortunately, both Lauren and Sheila then announced they were pregnant with Scott’s child. When Sheila’s was stillborn, she was so desperate to have Scott’s child that she stole Lauren’s son and named him Scott “Scotty” Grainger, Jr. while replacing him with a black market baby whom Lauren named Dylan Fenmore. Scott divorced Lauren and married Sheila, but Sheila’s mother, Molly, learned the truth about the baby swap and wanted to tell Lauren. Unfortunately, she suffered a stroke and Sheila had her committed. Lauren’s son, Dylan, sadly died of meningitis.
Fearing Molly would tell Lauren the truth, Sheila kidnapped both women and intended to kill them. After confessing to the baby switch, Sheila set fire to the farmhouse and her victims barely escaped with their lives. With Sheila presumed dead in the fire, Lauren re-married Scott, partially so she could ensure custody of her son, Scotty.
Scott was later diagnosed with a terminal illness, which he kept secret from Lauren. Discovering Sheila alive and in Los Angeles, she persuaded Scott to vacation with her in Catalina to humiliate her rival in front of her new husband, Eric Forrester. Lauren was surprised to learn Scott already knew Sheila was alive and begged him to talk to Eric about what Sheila was really like. Unfortunately, Scott died before he could say anything, but his dying wish was for Lauren to move on with her life and give Sheila another chance.
