When the news broke, Gina Tognoni spoke out on social media to say goodbye to the soap, but it took some time before it was confirmed that Michelle Stafford is returning to THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS to play Phyllis again! Tognoni last appeared in the June 7 episode, and Stafford makes her big comeback on Monday, June 17.
Stafford originated the role of Phyllis Summers back in October of 1994, and although initially a short-term role, was soon placed on contract with the soap, winning a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress. She departed in 1997, and the role was recast was recast with Sandra Nelson. But in 2000, Stafford returned to Y&R and earned a Lead Actress Daytime Emmy Award in 2004. But she left again in 2013, returning to daytime in 2014 as Nina Reeves on ABC sudser GENERAL HOSPITAL.
In 2014, the character of Phyllis was reintroduced with Tognoni taking over the role. She had previously played Kelly Cramer on ONE LIFE TO LIVE and also Dinah Marler on GUIDING LIGHT, and brought her Emmy Award-winning talents to Y&R, adding a Lead Actress trophy to her shelf in 2017 to add to the two Supporting Actress awards she earned while on GL.
