The character of Marge on THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS should look familiar to fans as she is played by Jeanne Cooper (Katherine)! The look-alike first appeared back in 1989 for a brief stint, then returned for another in 2008 where her character met a tragic fate. But her spirit returned for another visit for a special episode in 2009.
Marge Cotroke was discovered in 1989 by Clint Radison, who was stunned to realize that she was a dead ringer for the wealthy Katherine Chancellor. Clint knew all about her because her husband was Rex Sterling, his former cellmate. So he plotted to steal the Chancellor fortune by training the hard-scrabble waitress to become Kay. Clint enlisted two accessories, Morey and Lil, to go to work in the Chancellor mansion as spies and they helped him kidnap Katherine and a pregnant Esther Valentine. Posing as Katherine, Marge sold Chancellor Industries and ruined her marriage, sending Rex into the arms of Jill Foster! But their scam was thwarted when Kay’s son, Brock Reynolds, showed up and put the kibosh on it. Everyone went to prison, but Katherine felt bad for Marge, who she felt was used as a pawn. She helped her double get released from prison, and Marge left town in 1990.
In the fall of 2008, Marge contacted Katherine, who offered her help in dealing with her drinking problem. And when the two women were in a car accident on the way to rehab, a case of mistaken identity led everyone to believe Katherine had been the one who died. Marge’s spirit attended the funeral and was confused as to why none of her friends from the diner were there and realized that even though she was in the coffin, everyone in Genoa City thought they were mourning Katherine! Thankfully, Marge’s friend, Patrick Murphy, helped Katherine regain her lost memories and return home to her friends and family. Marge’s spirit appeared briefly as the DNA tests were run and the two women’s true identities were finally confirmed. Kay and Murphy then had a memorial service for Marge at Joe’s Diner where she used to work to say a final farewell.
After Katherine’s passing, the two women were reunited in the afterlife where they no doubt had a lot to talk about! And plenty of folks in Genoa City will never forget Marge Cotroke!
