Emmy-Winning Daytime Actor Henry Darrow Dead at 87
Veteran film and television actor Henry Darrow has died at the age of 87. Soap fans may recognize him best from his daytime roles on SANTA BARBARA, GENERAL HOSPITAL, ONE LIFE TO LIVE, or THE BOLD & THE BEAUTIFUL as well as appearances on primetime sudsers DYNASTY and DALLAS.
Born Enrique Tomás Delgado Jiménez, Darrow had already appeared in numerous films and television series before getting his big break in THE HIGH CHAPARRAL, a western TV show that ran for four seasons starting in 1967. He was also the first Latino actor to ever play the role of Zorro on television, starring in ZORRO AND SON. The character actor is also instantly recognizable from his countless guest appearances in primetime series like QUINCY, HART TO HART, GOLDEN GIRLS, T.J. HOOKER, KNIGHT RIDER, SISTERS, DIAGNOSIS MURDER, and ONE TREE HILL.
In daytime, Darrow appeared as both Ambassador Tabris and a villainous DVX colonel on GH and Danto Medina on OLTL in the ‘80s. From 1989-1992, he played Rafael Castillo on SANTA BARBARA, father to A Martinez’ Cruz. He earned the Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor for that role in 1990. And from 1998-2001, Darrow played the recurring role of Dr. Carlos Nunez on CBS soap B&B.
In 1972, Darrow co-founded the Screen Actors Guild Ethnic Minority Committee with actors Ricardo Montalbán, Edith Diaz, and Carmen Zapata. He was also a founder of Nosotros, an organization helping Latino actors land non-stereotypical parts.Â
