Y&R’s Abhi Sinha Guest Stars as Real-Life Scientist Nasir Ahmed on THIS IS US

Fans of THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS alum Abhi Sinha (ex-Ravi) got a special treat in the Feb. 16 episode of THIS IS US. The actor was playing real-life scientist Nasir Ahmed in the eighth episode of the fifth season of NBC’s primetime drama. “Watch THIS IS US!” Sinha announced on Instagram. “It’s about a family from Pittsburgh who are Steeler’s fans, and ya boy is guest-starring as the real-life Nasir Ahmed.”

Ahmed is an Indian scientist who is best known for inventing the discrete cosine transform in the early ‘70s, which is the most widely used data compression transformation, the basis for most digital media standards and commonly used in digital signal processing. Basically, he’s the man who helped create the technology that makes video chat like Zoom calls possible today!

Ahmed’s story was told in the episode of THIS IS US to highlight the importance of the technology in modern society, particularly during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Actress Katie Sarife played Ahmed’s wife, Esther, and the real-life couple was seen at the end of the show talking with the producers about their life story to be included in the episode. And when Sinha shared his photo from the THIS IS US set on Instagram, he also included a photo of the real Nasir and Esther Ahmed!

Sinha earned more than a few fans during his time on Y&R where he played Ravi Shapur on the CBS soap from 2016-18, and has continued to add more credits to his resume since leaving daytime. He could be seen in an episode of S.W.A.T. that aired back in November.

If you missed seeing SInha in the episode of THIS IS US titled “In The Room,” or if you just want to see it again, you can still watch it online or on demand.
