Lynn Herring Reveals the Backstage Secrets Behind Her Stunning GENERAL HOSPITAL Nurses Ball Fashions (EXCLUSIVE)
Lucy Coe may be a fashion diva on GENERAL HOSPITAL, but when portrayer Lynn Herring is working on her cattle ranch in Northern California, she’s not exactly focused on her hair, makeup or wardrobe. “I don’t get to look like this at the ranch, and I don’t even like massages or facials, so it’s a treat to be pampered,” she raved to Soaps In Depth. “And oh boy, does it feel special when everyone is making you look your best. I feel like I’m a piece of their artwork.”
The glamifaction starts when Herring comes down to Los Angeles for her fittings with GH’s costume designer, Shawn Reeves. “Oh gosh, we have fun!” she grinned. “It’s like playing dress-up. Shawn will pull out a dress and say, ‘What do you think?’ and then as soon as I zip it up, it’s, ‘Nope, get it off.’ We’re always on the same page. And we’re like kids. We throw it on the chair, and it’s on to the next one!”
When one of Lucy’s looks didn’t pan out, Reeves scrambled and came up with this vintage YSA Makino gown. “He zipped it up, and it was perfect,” Herring recalled. “It was a last-minute addition I loved!” (Photo Credit: Jim Warren)
During the Ball’s epic production days, the hair, makeup and wardrobe teams are usually hustling to get Herring through Lucy’s changes. With only five looks this year, however, there was a lot less hustle and a lot more time to enjoy being beautiful. “Instead of me rushing through and being seen for only two seconds, you got to really see the hair and makeup — which was done so well,” Herring says. “I felt so special. Plus, I appreciated not having to do so many quick changes!”
Amid all the fashion, drama and performances, Herring never forgets the Nurses Ball is all about educating viewers about HIV and AIDS. “We have been in the forefront of television in explaining that AIDS is something that can happen to your neighbor and friend,” she says. “And I can’t even describe how proud I am that we still do this.”
The annual event may be over now, but check out the gallery below as Herring reveals the backstage secrets behind Lucy’s 2018 looks!

Lynn Herring White Gown
"With the embellishments and the way Bob [Bessoir], our amazing lighting director, made the light hit this dress, I felt like a princess going down a beautiful runway," Herring sighed of this Romance Couture stunner. "The young people really liked this one — I think because it looks a little bit retro '20s with the beading and the pearl."
Lynn Herring Black Silver Gown
"When I put this on, we didn't even have to touch it," Herring said of this Mac Duggal gown. "It was very classy but still in-your-face enough for Lucy to wear in the opening number and on the red carpet. Plus, it was my llama mama gown, and it perfectly accented Dutch's lovely white fur!"
Lynn Herring Red Gown
“Instead of hit-you-on-your- head, over-the-top Lucy, this one is pretty understated, and I love that we changed it up,” Herring mused of this Sachin & Babi dress. “It got a bit somber with the nurses’ final number, so we went classy and elegant. It was a beautiful fabric with a bit of texture and a giant
bow on my hip."
Lynn Herring Black Sequin Gown
"Nancy Lee Grahn (Alexis) and Kelly Monaco (Sam) said I should borrow this one for an awards show,” Herring revealed of this JS Collections gown. “It was very comfortable but looked stunning because of the keyhole and the way the shoulders were out. It was almost retro '60s."
