Lifelong ALL MY CHILDREN fan Carol Burnett shared a hilarious memory of the classic soap!

During an appearance on CONAN, host Conan O’Brien brought up Burnett’s love for soap operas, and she admitted she was a huge fan of AMC. “I used to watch that religiously,” she said.

She then told a hilarious story about when she and her family went on a European vacation, she asked a friend to send her telegrams to keep her in the loop of what happened on the show while she was away. (It was hard keeping up with your soaps before the Internet!)

While staying at Lake Como in Italy, Burnett says she was woken at 2 a.m. by the hotel manager who was visibly shaking as he delivered the telegram he assumed was news from home. It included updates like: “Erica hasn’t come out of her coma yet” and “Mona is on trial for murder.”

“I started to laugh so hard,” Burnett recalled, “they thought I was crying!”

Burnett was such a big fan of AMC that creator Agnes Nixon created the character of Verla Grubbs for her to play in 1976. She appeared occasionally on the soap over the years, even returning to be part of the series finale.

This Saturday, Jan. 30, Burnett will be honored with the SAG Life Achievement Award during the 22nd Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards.
