Remember the ALS ice bucket challenge? Well, there’s a new version of that going around social media to raise awareness for the disease, and it involves getting a pie in the face! GENERAL HOSPITAL star Maurice Benard (Sonny) shared a video of himself participating in the challenge to do his part. “You’re probably wondering why I’m in the shower,” the shirtless actor began. “It’s because Kelly Clark challeneged me to the ALS challenge which means throwing this pie in my face… that I’m looking at right now. It’s for my friend who passed away, Dwight Clark. Great man, great football player…”
Benard then hesitates as he prepares to smack himself in the face with a pie, and you can hear his wife, Paula, behind the camera giggle and say, “Now or never, baby!” He then declares: “For the awareness of ALS and for everybody who has this really terrible disease.” Benard then smushes the pie into his face a little gently, and it looks like it was a delicious lemon meringue.
Dwight Clark was a championship football player who spent nine season with the San Francisco 49ers, winning two Super Bowls. He then moved off the field, acting as the general manager for the 49ers and later the Cleveland Browns. In March of 2017, he was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, better known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, and he passed away in June of 2018, survived by his wife, Kelly.
As with all of these social media challenges, when you do it, you have to challenge other people to do the same thing, and Benard selected his GH castmates, particularly singing out Steve Burton (Jason) and Ingo Rademacher (Jax). But only time will tell if any of them rise to the challenge and pie themselves as well!
