Maurice Benard Defends the Nixon Falls Storyline on GH
Soap fans are a passionate bunch and if they don’t like something that’s happening on one of their favorite soaps, they’re definitely going to let you know! The Nixon Falls storyline on GENERAL HOSPITAL has excited some fans who enjoy seeing a new side of Sonny, but upset others who just want him back in Port Charles with Carly and his family. However, Maurice Benard (Sonny) continues to make it known how much he’s enjoying playing this particular tale. “Did some scenes today with Cynthia Watros (Nina),” he tweeted. “Simple, sweet, a touch of magic. This, to me, is the underdog story. I will continue to keep bringing what I can to make it come to life. Doesn’t mean I don’t honor #CarSon.”
Benard is also enjoying the opportunity to use Sonny’s amnesia to flex his acting muscles and portray a different kind of character on the soap. “What I’m doing with ‘Mike’ is I’ve changed the energy and he’s become a lot more of my own personality,” the Emmy-winner explained. “You have to understand I haven’t been able to do this in 28 years, so it is very freeing. But do I miss Sonny? Yes, of course!”
In addition to using social media to take out their frustrations with GH and this particular storyline, some fans are specifically blasting Nina for keeping Sonny away from his loved ones for all this time. “But we need to ask ourselves have we ever done anything that we shouldn’t have for love?” argued Benard. And he definitely doesn’t agree with fans who don’t think Nina can be redeemed after the truth comes out. “Let me remind you when I first started the show, the horrific, terrible, malicious things that Sonny did,” the actor said. “Acting is all about choices. I figured it out 28 years later.”
In his decades on GH, Benard has always been a straight shooter, and he assured fans that is one thing that will never change. “Considering my past, you know if I hate the storyline I’m not good at faking,” he declared. “There have been many in the past, but this is not one of them.”
Plus, soap operas are all about building anticipation for the big, dramatic payoff, and obviously the explosive reveals and confrontations are just around the corner, so Benard urged fans to be patient and enjoy the roller coaster ride. “I don’t know what you have watched so far,” he teased, “but the scenes that I’ve been playing lately… I can’t give anything away… incredible!”
So stay tuned to see what happens when Port Charles learns that Sonny is still alive and Nina’s known all this time, and whether or not “Mike” will even know who he really is when all that happens!
