Brooke Anne Smith is a “Permanent Recast” for GH’s Molly

On July 19, GENERAL HOSPITAL viewers learned that the role of Molly had been recast yet again, when the announcer declared that Brooke Anne Smith would now be playing the role.

The news of the recast sparked a flurry of conversations on social media, as many watchers wondered if Smith would be another temporary recast like Holliday Mia Kriegel, who had been tapped to take over the role back in May following the arrest of Haley Pullos. GH fans also had reservations about the 39-year-old Smith playing the youngest Davis daughter since the character is approximately a decade younger than her portrayer. Thanks to Smith’s brother, Scott, those questions were answered, and some other insights were shared about the daytime newcomer on Facebook!

A few days after Smith made her first appearance, Scott joined in on the Facebook posts about the new Molly by writing one of his own on the General Hospital Fans — Official group page, which is run by the soap. Coming to his sister’s defense, Scott listed several points in Smith’s favor.

“Yes, I’m biased… I’m Brooke’s brother,” Scott began, adding that his sister is a full-time addition to the GH cast. “Brooke is a permanent recast; [the] original Molly is not coming back.”

After dropping that nugget of information, Scott directed his next point to the naysayers who claimed that the TOO CLOSE TO HOME alum wasn’t in the right age bracket for the character as she’s a few years older than Kate Mansi (Kristina) and several years younger than Kelly Monaco (Sam). “The only reason age is an issue is because it’s known,” he argued. “She looks extremely young in real life. It’s quite freaky, actually. [She] routinely gets carded almost every time. On the show AWKWARD, she played a 16-year-old high school student at 30!

Further pointing out that his sister has been acting for over 20 years and is quite an accomplished performer, Scott encouraged the soap’s viewers to give Brooke a fair shot. “Only asking to give her a chance,” he wrote. “It’s difficult for anyone trying to step into the shoes of someone that has been so integral to the show for so long.”

Signing off, Scott concluded his post as “a protective and proud big brother” and sent love “to all the GH fans, regardless of your fav Molly.”

As for the actress, Smith is thrilled to have been given the opportunity to play Molly. “Thank you to everyone who has been so kind to welcome me onto General Hospital!” she shared on Instagram. “I am honored to be a part of such an iconic show. To all my friends on here: I have been quiet on social media as I did not know how to answer why I dyed my hair. Now the cat is out of the bag, and I can share all the news!”
