Who Is Trina’s Father on GENERAL HOSPITAL? — Brook Kerr Speaks Out!
If you know anything about daytime television, then you know that just about every soap opera character is hiding a secret of some sort at one time or another. Some could be considered little white lies, while others are much more damning — and can completely upend another character’s life. Take GENERAL HOSPITAL’s Portia, for example. The true paternity of her daughter, Trina, has been something of a gray area. While it is believed that Portia’s ex-husband, Taggart, is Trina’s father, the doctor did have an affair with Curtis more than 20 years ago. Considering Trina’s age, the question begs: Has Portia been lying about who Trina’s father really is all this time?
Portia’s portrayer, Brook Kerr, had a lot to say about the matter in a recent interview with Soap Opera Digest. “I’ve had to ask myself that a few times,” the GH star confessed, especially after Portia and Curtis rekindled their romance. “I’ve kind of been trying to add a bit of extra ‘happy, happy’ to it, like, ‘Oh, let’s not think about it, let’s not think about that doubt.’ That’s what I call it, the doubt that Portia has as far as whatever that secret is.”
Kerr went on to explain that, as a performer, she made the choice of “Portia’s clearly doubling down” and putting whatever doubt there is about Trina’s paternity behind her in order to move forward. “And I’m daily trying to justify it. Daily!” she insisted. “I also understand life circumstances, too. Think about it — [Portia] must have been in medical school when [Trina] was born, family stuff going on, affairs going on, you know what I mean? Not knowing your future, wanting stability.”
And even though Taggert’s work with the DEA put a strain on their marriage that ultimately led to his and Portia divorcing, Kerr imagines that her alter ego wouldn’t have wanted to hurt her husband by disclosing that the daughter he adored may have been another man’s child. “These are the things that I’m kind of stewing on in my mind about what could have been happening at the time to justify a blatant lie,” the actress explained. “I’m daily working on that. But I do respect the fact that she’s trying! And I don’t think she wants to hurt anyone.”
But, Kerr concluded, if Portia has been keeping the truth about Trina’s father a secret all these years, the fallout won’t be pretty should the truth come to light! “In this situation, there is no way somebody’s not going to get hurt.”
