Why GH Fans Should Be Excited About the New Headwriters

When news broke that Patrick Mulcahey and Elizabeth Korte would be taking over as headwriters of GENERAL HOSPITAL from Chris Van Etten and Dan O’Connor, fans immediately began speculating on what kinds of changes they might expect to see once their material begins airing in March.

Korte has been writing for GH since 1995 so she is very familiar with life in Port Charles, even co-creating the spinoff series NIGHT SHIFT with Robert Guza, Jr. So Nancy Lee Grahn, who began playing Alexis Davis back in 1996, is very familiar with her work and told Soap Opera Digest she is “incredibly skilled and focused and incredibly dedicated to the show.”

Mulcahey has also written for GH before, both as a scriptwriter and associate headwriter between 1983 and 1999. But Grahn is also excited to have the scribe back because she loved his work on the scripts for SANTA BARBARA, where she played Julia Wainwright Capwell for many years. “He is pretty much the reason I’m still in soap operas,” the actress declared. “He wrote so many of the words that came out of the mouth of my character [on SANTA BARBARA], the best, most articulate words that just blew my mind and were so satisfying to say.”

Grahn believes that Mulcahey’s skill is influenced by his time with the legendary soap scribe, Douglas Marland. “Patrick worked with him and sort of learned the ropes through him,” she explained. “He loves to make characters dimensional and interesting and I’m excited to come to work to see what he’s going to write.”

The Emmy winner thinks fans should also be excited about what’s coming up on GH under the new headwriting team. “I think there’s every reason for people to be encouraged,” Grahn promised. “I just feel that really positive things are happening at GH and that it’s going to be fun for people to watch. I think he and Elizabeth are a great team.”
