Soap Star Michael Tylo Dead at 73
The daytime community has lost another legend: Soap hopper Michael Tylo has passed away at the age of 73. The sad news was announced on Sept. 29 by the College of Fine Arts at the University of Nevada Las Vegas, where Tylo was a film professor.
“Michael Tylo was a beautiful and caring human being — he was so special,” shared Dean Nancy Uscher on the UNLV website. “He was an exemplary friend, colleague, teacher, and artist. He had such a distinguished and rich career, but he was humble about his accomplishments. He loved his family dearly and led a joyous life, but he left us way too soon.”
A native of Detroit, Tylo made his daytime debut in 1980 as Peter Belton on ANOTHER WORLD. A year later, he was cast as GUIDING LIGHT’s Quint McCord, a role he played for four years opposite Lisa Brown’s Nola. The on-screen pair rose to soap supercoupledom as Nola fantasized them reenacting classic movie scenes like Casablanca, Wuthering Heights, and Camelot. After his Springfield run, Tylo went on to play ALL MY CHILDREN’s Matt Connolly, GENERAL HOSPITAL’s Charlie Prince, THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS’ good and evil twins Blade and Rick Bladeson, and THE BOLD & THE BEAUTIFUL’s sleazy lawyer, Sherman Gale.
Off screen, Tylo was married to his former AMC colleague Hunter Tylo (who played Robin on the ABC soap before moving to B&B as Taylor) from 1987-2005. The Tylos share three children, Michael Jr. (also known as Mickey, who tragically died in the family’s swimming pool in 2007), Izabella, and Katya. Tylo remarried in 2010, and he and his wife, Rachelle, welcomed daughter Kollette two years later.
Tylo’s second career — at UNLV — began in 2003 as a visiting professor. He served as an assistant dean for the College of Fine Arts and taught in the film and acting program. “We will miss him greatly,” concluded Uscher, “but feel deep gratitude about all that Michael contributed to the College of Fine Arts, UNLV, and the world.”
