Nicholas Chavez Reveals How He Landed the Role of Spencer on GENERAL HOSPITAL

After being bitten by the acting bug in high school, Nicholas Chavez enrolled in the Mason Gross acting conservatory at Rutgers University and then left after his sophomore year to try his luck in Hollywood. Unfortunately, the pandemic hit, and the industry shut down, so he moved to Florida to save money living with his family. 

Chavez hoped to one day return to California, but it happened sooner than expected when the self-tape audition he’d sent to GENERAL HOSPITAL landed him a screen test opposite Maura West (Ava) and subsequently his first television acting gig as the new Spencer Cassadine! “That was one of the happiest moments of my life,” he admitted to Soap Opera Digest.

The day after the screen test, Chavez found himself jumping straight into a front-burner storyline on GH and having to figure out exactly who Spencer is while also learning the ropes at the soap. “When I went in for the screen test,” he recalled, “they were big on [me portraying] that Spencer was a very confident guy, maybe even borderline arrogant, and that he had come from money, a lot of it and had a kind of reckless abandon that comes from unchecked wealth and power of that status.

“Immediately, my eyes lit up,” Chavez added, “because I was so excited to play a character that had that much subtext. As I’ve gotten to know Spencer more, I’ve realized just what a deeply complicated and complex individual he is. There is a deep vulnerability there. I think that at his core, he is broken and he is trying to look for ways that he can repair himself, while also still getting everything that he feels entitled to in Port Charles.”

Sadly, that has proven easier said than done as Esme continues to thwart his chances of finding happiness with Trina. So keep watching GH to see Chavez grow as Spencer’s storyline unfolds!
