“Virtual” 2020 Daytime Emmy Awards to Be Held This Fall

The 2020 Daytime Emmy Awards ceremony had already been postponed due to the current worldwide pandemic, but now the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences has announced that it will be holding “virtual” ceremonies later this year, with the 47th Daytime Emmys being held in the fall. Originally the Academy had hoped to hold the Sports, News & Documentary as well as Technology & Engineering ceremonies as usual, but with the current state of affairs, holding large events with so many attendees may not be a good idea even if restrictions had loosened enough by then to legally allow it.

“While it appears unlikely that officials would even permit these large-crowd events to be held this year, it is also clear that there will be a lag of time between being permitted to have an event and being able to provide an environment in which all attendees feel safe and comfortable attending it,” said NATAS President & CEO Adam Sharp. “Ultimately, a single person-to-person transmission resulting in serious infection would be devastating evidence of mistaken judgment in proceeding.”

The Daytime Emmy Awards will be one of the ceremonies this year to be produced using remote video production technology that will bring the presenters and nominees together in a virtual space. As previously announced, the Daytime Emmys will be streamed through NATAS’ upcoming app as well as other distribution partners. Nominees are still scheduled to be announced in May, so keep checking back for that news as well as updates on the new date for the Daytime Emmy Awards ceremony.
