Nathanyael Grey Insists GH’s Mason Isn’t All Bad

As soon as Mason was introduced on GENERAL HOSPITAL, he was clearly a very shady character. However, portrayer Nathanyael Grey doesn’t believe his alter ego is as bad as fans might think. Could the guy really have a good heart in there somewhere?

When he first joined the cast of GH back in the spring of 2022, Grey didn’t have a whole lot to work with as the character of Mason was brand new. Luckily, playing villains is right in the actor’s wheelhouse! “I’ve played a bad guy in, well, everything I’ve done!” he admitted to Soap Opera Digest. “It’s kind of like, my shtick, as it were.”

Eventually, as Mason’s character was fleshed out more and more during subsequent appearances, Grey was able to get more of a handle on his role. And while most viewers would consider Mason a straightforward villain, the actor insists his character isn’t all bad.

“He’s just doing what he’s told to the best of his ability,” Grey explained. “I tried to reflect that with some of the dialogue that they would allow me to change here and that, that he’s just a guy doing his job, but he’s morally ambiguous with what the job entails.

“One time, they wrote that Mason was directly threatening Georgie,” he added. “I changed the line to ‘Don’t make me.’ Like, ‘I don’t want to do it but I will,’ as opposed to ‘I will totally kidnap a kid!’ Once I knew that Mason’s family has a trucking company and who the boss was, I was like, ‘Oh, okay, well, he doesn’t want to lose his family business, so he kind of has to do these things.’ And Frank [Valentini, GH’s executive producer] backed that up; he said, ‘You’re actually a gray character. You’re not all bad.’”

Of course, Mason is currently in a lot of hot water after going rogue and trying to kill Ava, something he was not forced into doing! “Where we are in the storyline right now, he’s kind of painted himself into a corner…” Grey admitted.
