Who Was Eve Howard on THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS?
Talk of Eve Howard on THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS has some newer fans wondering who this character was. And even some longtime viewers might need a refresher, so that’s where we come in! Eve first appeared back in January 1981, played by Margaret Mason. After her initial run came to an end in April 1983, the actress reprised the role in February 1993 until November of that year. And for a 2023 storyline, Y&R has dived back into its storied history to spin a new tale out of this old character, so here’s what you need to know!
While working as Victor Newman’s assistant at Newman Enterprises, Eve had a one-night stand with her boss before leaving town. The following year, while Victor was out of town, Eve returned to Genoa City and began working for Stuart Brooks. Eve warned Victor’s wife, Julia Newman, that she was going to get him back, upsetting her so much that Julia had an affair with Michael Scott! Ultimately, Victor agreed to accept that Eve’s son, Charles (later named Cole Howard), was his child as long as she left to work for one of his other companies far away.
After learning that Lorie Brooks had left Victor at the altar, Eve returned to Genoa City to work on him some more. Although involved with a wealthy count named Max Siebalt, he had gone broke, so the two of them schemed to steal Victor’s fortune. Once again working for Victor, Eve began slowly poisoning him so that her son would inherit half his money. But Victor found out and tricked Eve into confessing by proposing and then faking his death on the day of their wedding. Noting Eve starting to lose her grip on reality, Max quickly married her as he assumed she would inherit Victor’s estate. When Victor revealed he was really alive, a stunned Max fell against a pitchfork and died. Eve tried to stab Victor but was arrested and committed to a sanitarium.
Reading about Victor’s wedding to Nikki Reed in the paper, Eve switched places with her roommate who was about to be released and infiltrated the wedding. Disguised as a caterer, she attempted to stab the bride but was thwarted and returned to the mental hospital. But shortly thereafter, she reconnected with her ex, Rick Daros, who was also a patient and the two escaped, stole money from Victor’s safe, and took off for Europe.
In 1993, Eve resurfaced and her crimes seemed to be a thing of the past. She reminded Victor of their son and while he initially wanted nothing to do with him, later invited Cole to Genoa City. Things got complicated when Cole wrote to his mother to reveal he’d fallen in love with Victor’s daughter, Victoria Newman, and she rushed home to stop them. Unfortunately, she became ill and fell into a coma before dying. Cole and Victoria then eloped, but thankfully, Victor discovered that the two were not brother and sister after all. Years later, Cole and Victoria named their baby Eve after his mother, but the infant passed away.
However, in November 2023, it was revealed that Cole and Victoria’s daughter had survived and was now going by the name of Claire Grace! And Eve’s sister, Jordan Howard, was out for revenge against the Newmans for the way they treated her sibling!
