Rebecca Herbst Opens up About Nikolas’ Sudden Exit on GH
Fans weren’t the only ones disappointed when Nikolas was suddenly written off of GENERAL HOSPITAL. Rebecca Herbst admitted that she was sorry to see Liz’s storyline with Nik come to such an abrupt end given everything that the two characters have shared over the years.
“I was really excited when they put me in a storyline with Nikolas because Elizabeth has so much history with him,” Herbst confided to Soap Opera Digest. “There are 25 years of layers between them — they’ve been friends and lovers and enemies and I’ve loved him and I’ve hated him. There’s a lot going on between those two, so I was sad that that aspect of it didn’t go on longer.”
Liz found herself reluctantly roped into Nikolas’ kidnapping of Esme and agreeing to help keep the pregnant young woman captive in Wyndemere led to the nurse even claiming to be pregnant with her ex’s baby! Of course, she quickly came clean about the lie and refused to help Nikolas any further, even considering turning herself in to the police for aiding and abetting his crimes.
Of course, if she does that, Liz will be the only one facing any consequences since Nikolas has disappeared from Port Charles. (Ava is actually hiding his body after delivering a fatal blow to the back of his head.) Marcus Coloma was let go from the soap and GH temporarily recast the role of Nikolas with Adam Huss again to wrap up his final scenes. So while Liz’s storyline will continue to unfold, Nikolas will not be playing an active role in it anymore.
“I’m sad that there’s no more Nikolas on the show because I think for Elizabeth, it was really great having that character to spar with like that because it was real,” Herbst admitted. “We didn’t have to, like, make up history because people remember the history. I wish we could have enjoyed that relationship a little bit longer.”
Well, Nikolas has been presumed dead before and come back anyway, so who knows what the future might hold? Keep watching GH to see what happens next!
