Will GH Introduce Dex’s Family? — Evan Hofer Speaks Out!
It’s been over a year since Evan Hofer made his GENERAL HOSPITAL debut as the mysterious Dex Heller — and viewers haven’t learned much about Sonny’s right-hand man. That all changed in a recent episode, however, when Dex explained his complicated feelings about Christmas and his even more complicated family dynamics to his girlfriend, Josslyn. Does that mean that the soap may finally be delving into the character’s backstory?
In an interview with SoapHub, Hofer confessed his excitement at the possibility. “I think it’s really cool,” he shared. “We haven’t learned a lot about his past because he’s [been] very tight-lipped about it.”
Hofer believes his alter ego has gone to great lengths to hide his vulnerable side. “I think he feels a lot of shame and pain around it,” mused the actor. “He wants to be this new version of himself that he’s created with this father figure he has in Sonny and this love with Joss and these feelings that he’s never had.
“Dex is very worried that that history is going to bleed into this and kind of ruin his new life,” he added.
The emotional scenes surrounding Dex’s family unfolded between Joss and her beau on Dec. 11, when she casually mentioned that he needed a Christmas tree in his apartment. Embracing the moment to finally open up to his girlfriend about his traumatic childhood that included a father who constantly cheated on his mother, and brothers who frequently bullied and beat him. “It sounds very Harry Potter to me — living under the staircase and being beaten up,” Hofer noted.
Yet those complex relationships with Dex’s parents and siblings would make for great soap opera drama should the Heller family be introduced to the GH canvas. “I would love to see that happen because you [then] get to see new layers to characters,” Hofer suggests. “That’s what’s so beautiful about daytime. This new side can be developed.”
