Cameron Mathison Mourns the Loss of His Beloved Dog Red
Daytime star Cameron Mathison (Drew, GENERAL HOSPITAL) shared some heartbreaking news on social media when he announced that his beloved family pet has died. “So incredibly sad to say our sweet Red has lost his battle with cancer,” the actor revealed on Instagram. “Fortunately he passed away peacefully while sleeping.”
Back in August, Mathison shared that Red had been diagnosed with cancer months earlier and it had caused paralysis in the Doberman Pinscher’s back legs. He admitted at the time that the prognosis wasn’t good but “with the help of Two Hands Four Paws Foundation, we are doing the best to keep his quality of life the best we can for the time he has left.”
On Dec. 11, the GH star shared a video montage of photos of Red both by himself and with his wife, Vanessa, and their kids, Lucas and Leila, all set to the song “You’re My Best Friend” by Queen. “He was truly my best buddy and such a huge part of our family,” Mathison declared. “Every day when I came home he would run to our driveway fence and kiss me through the bars before I came through the gate. Every single day. So many great memories… grateful for all of them. I miss you already, sweet boy.”
Naturally, the comments on Mathison’s Instagram post were filled with condolences from fans and friends, including some former co-stars. “Oh no, Cam,” cried former ALL MY CHILDREN castmate Alicia Minshew (Kendall). “Thinking of you and your family. What a sweet boy he was.”
“Cammy,” shared Rebecca Budig (ex-Hayden, GH; Greenlee, AMC). “So sad. Thank God he went peacefully. You said that’s all you wanted for him. I’m so so sorry for you and your family.” And Melissa Claire Egan (Chelsea, THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS; Annie, AMC) wrote: “Nooooo. Cammy. I am so sorry. Sending you so much love. He’s at the Rainbow Bridge now.”
