Maurice Benard Defends Gladys’ Punishment on GH
While GENERAL HOSPITAL fans were thrilled that Sasha’s suffering was finally over, some were disappointed in how the storyline wrapped up. Because while Dr. Montague was arrested, Gladys was simply banished from Pot Charles by Sonny. And when some fans complained on the social media platform X, Maurice Benard (Sonny) defended his alter ego’s actions.
“I think the writers did it perfect,” he posted. “He is big on family. He gave her a chance. Whether you like it or not, he’s never been evil. He did say if you do it again, it’s going to be different.”
Sasha’s unstable behavior got her committed to Ferncliff, but it was all part of Glady’s scheme to maintain control over Sasha’s money to pay off her mounting gambling debts. Gladys was horrified to learn just how far Dr. Montague was taking things by drugging Sasha, but she still set the ball rolling. So Sonny sent her back to Bridgeport and warned her to keep her nose clean or her next trip would be more… permanent.
Viewers were eager to see Gladys pay for her crimes, and being kicked out of town just didn’t quite satisfy their thirst for blood. Some pointed out that Gladys committed crimes, and Sonny is basically obstructing justice with no regard for the law, something he often gets away with.
“He has gone to prison,” Benard noted. “Not as much as he should have, but where he pays for it is by all the people that he has lost… All that is his punishment.”
Some fans also argued that Sonny’s “kinder” punishment could have been the result of his time spent as “Mike” in Nixon Falls. But when one wondered if this “softer, more understanding Sonny” would be as “sympathetic and understanding” of Nina when he finds out she called the SEC on Carly and Drew, Benard could only reply with a flushed face emoji!
We’ll have to keep watching GH to see how Sonny reacts to that particular bombshell!
