Cynthia Watros Reveals Why Nina Is Keeping Sonny a Secret on GH
The Nixon Falls storyline on GENERAL HOSPITAL has become quite controversial among viewers with some growing frustrated that Nina is keeping Sonny away from his family and loved ones in Port Charles and Carly, who believes her husband is dead. Maurice Benard (Sonny) and Laura Wright (Carly) have already offered fans their own take on the story and promising “great stuff” to come and now Cynthia Watros has offered some insight into Nina’s motivations.
The actress explained that when Nina first met “Mike” in Nixon Falls, she didn’t know what she was seeing. “She thought she was kind of losing her mind or something,” Watros told Soap Opera Digest. “She was thinking ‘Maybe he’s not sonny, he’s just a guy who completely looks like Sonny and talks like Sonny.’ That went away quickly, and then she was concerned for his mental health.
“Like, if I just blurt out to him, ‘You’re this guy, you’re the head of this mob and you have a wife and kids,’ is that too much information? Would that be a harm to him?” she continued. “So she was grappling with that and she did try to call Carly, and Carly was mean to her — rightfully so, because they’re in a bit of a rough patch right now. I think it kind of broke open Nina’s vulnerability and hurt.”
As Nina has spent more time in Nixon Falls, she has seen how happy and content “Mike” is and has found that same kind of feeling for herself in the small town, far from the drama and heartbreak of Port Charles. “I feel that she sees ‘Mike’ and thinks, ‘Maybe being here is like a gift for him,’” Watros mused. “Plus, in Nixon Falls, she’s finding a happiness within herself that she hasn’t felt in a long time.”
But Watros insisted that she doesn’t believe Nina is doing any of this out of hatred for Carly. “We all make bad choices in our life, and I think she just gets carried away,” she argued. “So she just digs her hole a little deeper. She’s not a bad person. She’s not trying to hurt anyone. I think if she had a conversation with Carly and she was in tears saying, ‘Nina, I miss him so much and I’m in trouble here in Port Charles,’ I’m sure Nina would tell her the truth.”
However, while fans would love nothing more than for Sonny to get his memories back and come home to Port Charles, Watros isn’t in any hurry to see this storyline thread come to an end anytime soon. Because in Nixon Falls, Nina is actually happy for the first time in ages, and as soon as the truth comes out, she’s likely to be more miserable than she’s been in a long time! “I know that we can’t stay in Nixon Falls forever,” the actress confided, “but I’m really enjoying it for as long as we’re going to be there.”
